City directories are an excellent resource for family history and genealogical research. In addition to providing lists of residents of a city for a given year, directories include addresses, phone numbers, occupations, and even spouse's names. They can help determine where an ancestor lived between censuses and can be particularly useful for finding information about individuals who can be difficult to locate in other types of resources, such as boarders, widows, and working women.
City directories are also rich in other contextualizing features, such as listings of clubs and organizations (along with the names of their members), advertisements, and addresses for institutions such as schools, hospitals, and churches.
The library has print copies of Forest Grove city directories for the years 1959, 1960, 1968, and 1974 shelved in the History Room. Contact us if you'd like us to look up the name or address of a person or business for you.
