Transportation and Destinations
Highway 47 is a north-south corridor that runs along the eastern edge of the City connecting with Highway 26 to the north and to an existing multi-use trail runs along Highway 26. Oregon Route 8, known locally as the Tualatin Valley Highway is the primary east–west highway. The David Hill Trail runs along David Hill Road is a major collector street.
The proposed trail segments will improve access to existing local and regional transit facilities. The Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District (TriMet) provides light rail and bus transfer, via line 57, that connects to Pacific University. The bus line connects directly to Hillsboro Central and Beaverton transit center and further connections can be made to Cornelius, Portland, and east Multnomah County. The bus line does not directly intersect with the proposed trails, but connections can be made to both segments through the Highway 47 multi-use trail. Line 57 has a stop located at the intersection Quince St and Pacific Avenue, in close proximity to the Highway 47 trail. The City also operates GroveLink, a free bus service providing community access to local destinations and regional transit services such as TriMet bus line 57 and Ride Connection's WestLink Bus.
Existing biking facilities are present along Old Town Loop Trail and Highway 47 Trail, as shared-use paths, or bike lanes. Additionally, bike lanes are also present along some western segments of OR-8/Gales Creek Road and eastern segments of Pacific Avenue and 19th Avenue in the City. The proposed trails will connect with several of the existing facilities and provides better connected biking connections in the City.
At the regional level, the two segments of the Forest Grove Loop Trail will be part of the Emerald Necklace trail which connects to the proposed multi-use Council Creek Trail on the eastern edge of the City providing a connection to Cornelius and Hillsboro. Within the City, Forest Grove Loop Trail connects with Old Town Loop Trail and Highway 47 Trail.
The trail segments will connect to several destinations in the city. The David Hill Trail will provide connections to Forest Grove High School, Thatcher Park and Upper and Lower Forest Glen Park. The Gales Creek Trail will connect to Reuter Farm Park, Knox Ridge Park, Tom McCall Upper Elementary School, B Street Trailhead, and Kyle Park.
Land Use
The majority of the land uses adjacent to the two trail segments include a variety of single-family residential uses. In addition, smaller areas of industrial, neighborhood mixed-use, residential multifamily, and institutional land uses are also located near the trails.
For the most part, the trail segments run along the UGB in the North, east and south edges of the City. The David Hill Trail will be closely aligned with the northern and eastern boundaries of the City and the UGB. The Gales Creek Trail will be along the southern edge of the City/UGB boundary.
The David Hill Trail will run along the eastern edges of the David Hill Urban Reserve Area. The David Hill Urban Reserve Area is an irregular shaped area on the northwest edge of Forest Grove located in the vicinity of NW David Hill Road. The UGB forms the boundary on the eastern side and rural reserve land is to the west, north and south. Access to the area is provided by NW David Hill Road, NW Gales Creek Road and NW Thatcher Road. Areas to the west of the David Hill trail and the south of the Gales Creek trail are designated as rural reserves.
